My electric powered projects
When I was a teenager I discovered the hobby of racing electric powered remote controlled cars. My first R/C car was an associated RC10. Powered by 6 NiCad 1700ma batteries and a “stock” 27t brushed motor. I enjoyed this hobby for several years and progressed through several cars including a heavily modified RC10B2 buggy, an RC10T2 stadium truck, and a Team Losi XX-4, 4 wheel drive buggy. During this time Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries entered the market and allowed for longer run time.
After racing cars for several years I was introduced to the world of remote controlled airplanes. My first plane was a Goldberg Electra, an electric powered 3 channel glider. To say this glider was underpowered was being kind. Requiring a hand launch because there are no wheels on this model. 6 NiCad cells an a 550 brushed motor turning an 8×4 prop generated very little power. Man what a blast! I was so exited to have something I built from a box of wood and parts fly and even though it took most of the battery power to climb to a good altitude chasing thermals was very satisfying.
Another hobby I enjoy is riding Off Highway Vehicles (OHV). I bought a small 110cc sized quad that was electric powered by a 36volt battery and large brushed motor.
